Four gold chapter headings break black verse on a gold-flecked page

Four columns of black nasta'liq verse fill a tan text panel ruled in gold, broken by four horizontal chapter headings: gilt cartouches with orange and blue script, flanked by blue floral panels. A small round seal is stamped just above the text block, and a wide blue-grey margin flecked with gold surrounds the page on every side.

The Mantiq al-Tayr, or Language of the Birds, is an allegorical poem composed around 1177 by the Sufi poet Farid al-Din Attar of Nishapur (c. 1142–c. 1220). The birds of the world, led by the hoopoe, set out across seven valleys in search of the Simurgh as their sovereign; only thirty arrive, and in Persian thirty birds, si murgh, is the name they sought. The birds stand for souls in search of spiritual union. A celebrated copy written in Herat in 1487 and completed with paintings in Isfahan around 1600 is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
