Two Indian trees are studied in detail with birds in their branches

Two trees fill the page in a botanical study on tan paper: above, a rounded tree with dark green leaves and small yellow fruit, three small birds nearby; below, a spreading tree with blue-green foliage and clusters of orange-red berries, small birds among the branches. At the bottom the bare trunk and roots of a third tree appear at the edge of the ground. Persian captions in black nasta'liq are inscribed beside each tree, illustrating trees of India described in the Baburnama, memoirs of the Mughal emperor Babur.

Mughal court painting began with the Persian masters Mir Sayyid Ali and Abd al-Samad, whom the emperor Humayun brought to India. Under Akbar (r. 1556–1605) an imperial workshop of Persian and Indian artists illustrated histories and translations, among them Babur's memoirs, rendered into Persian in 1589, and Hindu texts such as the Harivamsa. Jahangir favoured portraits and studies of birds, flowers and animals, and Shah Jahan's albums set paintings and calligraphy within decorated borders. Folios from these manuscripts and albums are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
