Inside a black cave mouth ringed with pink rocks, Rustam, in a white beast-head helmet with plumes, a maroon coat and a quiver at his hip, grips the horn of the spotted White Div and drives a dagger into its chest. The demon's severed leg lies on the cave floor below, flecked with blood. At the right a man in orange stands roped to a tree trunk, and at the upper left a youth and a horse look on from behind the rocks. Text panels fit around the scene.

The original: a folio from an illustrated manuscript of the Shahnama (Book of Kings), painted in ink, opaque watercolour, silver and gold on paper in Isfahan, Iran, dated 1077 AH/1666–67 CE, with the painting attributed to Mu'in Musavvir. It is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Mu'in Musavvir was a Persian painter who worked in Isfahan from the 1630s to the 1690s. A pupil of Reza Abbasi, he stayed faithful to the Isfahan style of his teacher and avoided the influence of Western painting. He painted figures, animals, and battle and banquet scenes, among them scenes of ordinary people, unusual in Persian painting, and more than 300 paintings and drawings attributed to him survive. In the 1660s he painted illustrations for a copy of Firdausi's Shahnama. His work, including a painting of mythical creatures around a lotus leaf dated 1677, is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order. Unframed prints are made on Hahnemühle German Etching, a 310gsm matte fine-art paper. Framed prints arrive in a handmade solid-wood frame with low-reflection glazing, ready to hang. Ships worldwide with free delivery to 30+ countries.

The story behind 9 Art Prints

9 Art Prints was founded by author Arif Anwar around two simple ideas: that great art should reach far beyond the familiar Western canon, and that fine art reproductions should be made with exceptional materials.

So we seek out remarkable artists and traditions from around the world, then reproduce them using carefully sourced images, archival giclée printing, and fine art papers from Hahnemühle.

FAQ

Every work chosen by hand and made to Archival Museum Standards, with free shipping, import duties covered and a real person to help before and after you buy.

Who chooses the art?

People do. Every work in the collection is chosen by hand, from the great names of art history to artists and traditions you rarely see as prints: Persian miniatures, South Asian painting, Bauhaus posters, Belle Époque illustration and much more.

Could I get this print somewhere else? Why buy it from you?

Yes, you can, and it depends on what you want from a print. If you want a poster to put up on the wall, that is completely fine. If you want a print that will last for decades, one you might one day pass down to your children, this is the print for you.

It is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a high-resolution scan of the original, kept to the artwork's own proportions, printed as a 12-ink giclée rated to stay true for more than 100 years. Unframed prints are on Hahnemühle fine-art paper; framed prints come in real, solid-wood frames, handmade to order. And we look after you long after it arrives.

What is included in the price?

Your print and delivery to your door. Shipping is free, and we cover import duties: if you are charged a duty when your print arrives, send the receipt to support@9artprints.com and we will reimburse you.

Can I talk to a real person?

Always. Write to support@9artprints.com or call +1 (647) 455 2253, before you order or long after your print arrives. Choosing a size, asking about a custom size or a framing question: just ask.

What if something is wrong when it arrives?

We make it right at no cost. If your print arrives damaged, defective or not what you ordered, tell us and we will arrange a replacement or another fix. You won't need to send it back. Returns & guarantee

Unframed prints can also be returned or exchanged within 30 days of delivery, for any reason. Exchanges (wrong size or a different artwork) are free and we send the new print right out; for a refund, mail the print back in its original tube and cover the return postage. Framed prints are made to order and are final sale unless they arrive damaged.

How do I care for my print when it arrives?

Unframed prints travel rolled in a protective tube. This is the standard and safest way to ship a print: a rolled sheet cannot be creased or have its corners knocked in transit. Framed prints arrive ready to hang.

Hahnemühle paper is very delicate. Its soft, textured matte surface marks far more easily than ordinary poster paper, so handle it with care. Wash and dry your hands first, or wear clean cotton gloves if you have them. Hold the sheet by its edges with both hands, and never touch the printed surface.

To flatten your print:

  1. Unroll it face up on a clean, dry, flat surface. Never roll it the opposite way or press out the curl by hand: that can crease the paper and crack the printed surface.
  2. Cover it with a clean sheet of acid-free tissue or plain white paper. Avoid newspaper, wax paper or anything printed.
  3. Rest a few large books on top, spread evenly, and leave for 24 to 48 hours. The paper will relax on its own.

Frame your print behind glass as soon as you can, and keep it flat until then. Hang it out of direct sunlight and away from damp and heat, such as bathrooms and radiators. If it gathers dust, use a soft, dry brush; never water or cleaning products.

Unsure about anything? Any professional framer will know how to handle and flatten your print, and you can always write to us before you unroll it.

What paper do you use?

Our unframed prints are made principally on Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm and Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm. German Etching has a substantial, lightly textured surface that works exceptionally well for paintings and richly coloured works. Photo Rag has a smoother cotton surface suited to graphic, modernist and highly detailed imagery.

Paper is selected according to the character of the artwork rather than using one generic stock for everything. Each product page names the paper for that print.

What does “giclée” mean?

Giclée is a fine-art printing process using archival pigment inks and high-resolution inkjet printing, made to reproduce subtle colour gradations, fine detail and tonal depth.

Will large prints still look sharp?

Large-format reproduction depends heavily on the quality of the underlying artwork file. We source the highest-resolution material available and prepare each image for print rather than simply enlarging a small internet image.

That is especially important with historic paintings, posters and archival works where source quality varies considerably.

What about your framed prints?

Our framed pieces use solid-wood frames, handmade to order, with low-reflection glazing. There is no mount: the print fills the frame.

Will the colours look exactly like my screen?

Screens emit light; paper reflects it, so no physical print can be identical to every monitor or phone display. We prepare our artwork specifically for print and aim for accurate colour, contrast and tonal reproduction.

The texture and surface of fine-art paper also give the finished piece a physical depth that cannot be shown completely on a screen.
