The crane is among the most revered motifs in Japanese art — a symbol of longevity, grace, and spiritual elevation that appears across painting, ceramics, textile, and printmaking from the Heian period to the present. The Hasegawa school and Ogata Kōrin (1658–1716), the supreme master of the Rinpa school, both produced iconic crane compositions in their respective traditions — monumental crane screens in the case of the Hasegawa school, and the exquisitely patterned cranes of Kōrin's Rinpa design vocabulary. Together they represent the full range of the Japanese crane tradition.
