Takeda Mokurai (武田黙雷, 1854–1930) was a Japanese Rinzai Zen master, calligrapher, and Buddhist reformer of the Meiji and Taisho eras — a practitioner who combined rigorous monastic discipline with an engagement with the challenges of modernity. His Zen calligraphy, executed with the force and spontaneity that the Rinzai tradition demands, embodies the direct expression of Zen mind: not decorative, not studied, but immediate — the brush as an extension of awakened consciousness. His White Ox, drawn from the ancient ox-herding allegory of the Zen path, is among his most powerful calligraphic works.
