Bijin-ga — pictures of beautiful women — was one of the defining genres of Japanese printmaking from the Edo period through the Shin Hanga revival. The tradition produced some of the most formally sophisticated and emotionally subtle images in the history of art: women at mirrors, women in rain, women folding letters, each composition a study in posture, textile, and quiet inner life. The great bijin-ga artists — Utamaro, Shinsui, Hashiguchi Goyō — each brought to the genre a distinctive vision of feminine beauty, refinement, and psychological depth.
