Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese woodblock print — an artist whose landscape series The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō and One Hundred Famous Views of Edo transformed Western art's understanding of what a landscape image could do. His rain, mist, snow, and blossom, his plunging perspectives and flat decorative planes, directly influenced the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, particularly Monet, Whistler, and van Gogh, who copied his prints. His bird-and-flower prints (kachō-ga) — combining zoological precision with a formal elegance of the highest order — are among the most sought-after objects in the ukiyo-e collector market.
