A lord kneels with a dagger as his retainers look on

Six men fill a room hung with a repeating crest pattern, each named on a label above his head. At the centre a lord in white kneels on a white mat, a wrapped dagger in his hands and his head bowed. Beside him a retainer in black with a white crest bows low; behind them a bald elder in a mottled brown robe leans forward and a man in a blue crested robe looks down. At the right a man in a blue patterned robe and a scowling man in black watch. Two small vases stand at the mat's corners.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861) brought heroes, monsters and spectacle into the ukiyo-e print. A pupil of Toyokuni, he made his name in 1827 with the series of the One Hundred and Eight Heroes of the Suikoden, tattooed warriors caught mid-action, and went on to giant skeletons, cats, whales and satirical puzzles that slipped past the censors. His restless invention influenced Yoshitoshi and, much later, tattoo and manga art. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
