Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861) was the most inventive and theatrically daring of the great Edo-period ukiyo-e masters — the artist of warriors, dragons, mythic battles, and supernatural confrontations. Where Hokusai gave us landscape and Hiroshige gave us atmosphere, Kuniyoshi gave us drama: prints of wild energy, virtuoso composition, and an almost cinematic scale of imagination. His warrior triptychs remain among the most dynamic images of 19th-century art.
