A woman gathers water among blooming yamabuki flowers

A woman bends at the edge of a stream, her red under-kimono tucked up to bare her calves and feet, reaching toward the water with a white cloth in hand. Her grey outer robe, patterned overall and lined with a butterfly motif at the sleeve, slips off one shoulder. She is framed by masses of yellow kerria blossoms and white cherry blossom overhead against a blue sky, with a small pale frog on the bank near her feet. The artist's signature cartouche and a red seal appear at right.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861) brought heroes, monsters and spectacle into the ukiyo-e print. A pupil of Toyokuni, he made his name in 1827 with the series of the One Hundred and Eight Heroes of the Suikoden, tattooed warriors caught mid-action, and went on to giant skeletons, cats, whales and satirical puzzles that slipped past the censors. His restless invention influenced Yoshitoshi and, much later, tattoo and manga art. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
