A dense bouquet of white, yellow, pink and red flowers

A tall, dense bouquet of mixed flowers, white and yellow chrysanthemums, pink blossoms and a few deep red and orange blooms, rises from a pale ceramic urn against a dark blue background. Petals are built with thick, curling strokes, while long green stems and leaves fan out beneath the flower heads. The urn stands on a table, with a warm red-brown surface visible at the lower edge.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
