A tall glass of pale yellow-green absinthe stands beside a clear glass carafe of water on a white marble cafe table. Behind, a wooden chair back and a lattice of window frames open onto a blurred street scene where small figures walk past. Loose, sketchy brushwork renders the reflections in the glass and the patterned brickwork below the windows. Painted in 1887.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
