A lone figure walks a long vaulted corridor of golden arches

A row of receding stone arches, washed in mustard yellow and pale blue-grey, forms a long vaulted corridor. A single small figure walks away down the centre, dwarfed by the repeating arcade. The tiled floor is patterned in diagonal strokes of red-brown and pink, edged by blue-grey skirting along the walls. Painted in 1889.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
