A young man is shown in three-quarter profile against a flat emerald-green background. He wears a wide-brimmed dark blue hat, a matching blue jacket, and a loosely knotted white cravat. His face is modelled in warm ochre and pink tones, with a faint moustache and a downcast, thoughtful gaze. The jacket is built from long, parallel strokes of blue and black over the green ground.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
