A heap of ripe quinces, lemons, pears and grapes

A pile of pale yellow quinces and pears sits beside a single orange and two lemons, with a small bunch of pale green grapes on a stem resting atop the fruit. Everything rests on a golden-yellow cloth rendered in bold diagonal brushstrokes, against a matching yellow background of the same warm tone. The signature 'Vincent 87' with a dedication beneath it appears in the lower left corner.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
