Rows of golden wheat sheaves stand across a sunlit field

A row of tall wheat sheaves, bundled and standing upright like tepees, stretches across the canvas in a wide, low format. Their golden stalks are streaked with blue shadow, and pale blue light falls between them onto the stubbled ground. A line of green trees closes the horizon at the upper left, under a pale, hazy sky. Painted in July 1890.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
