A wooden drawbridge with angled beams and taut rigging spans a pale turquoise canal, a small dark boat moored nearby. A few tiny figures stand on the far bank near the bridge, with a cluster of houses and trees behind. In the foreground, a sandy towpath cuts through low green shrubs. The signature 'Vincent' is inscribed in the lower left. Painted in 1888.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
