A sower strides beneath a giant sun and a leaning tree

A dark-clad sower strides across a violet-blue ploughed field, scattering seed with an outstretched arm. Behind him a huge yellow sun dominates a yellow-green sky streaked with pink clouds, and a gnarled, blossoming tree trunk leans diagonally across the composition, its branches curling overhead. A small farmhouse and trees sit along the distant horizon, and the colour is built from bold, complementary contrasts of violet and yellow.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
