Two tall dark cypress trees rise at the right against a sky filled with swirling blue-white clouds. Below, pale blue mountains cross the middle distance, with green shrubs and trees along the horizon. A field of golden wheat fills the foreground, edged by a low green hedge scattered with red poppies and small white and yellow flowers. The brushwork moves in energetic, curling strokes throughout the sky and field alike.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
