Gold floral scrollwork frames diamond medallions of script

A double-page opening glows with dense gold floral scrollwork on an olive-gold ground, framed by a blue-and-red diamond-lattice border and an outer band of large gold flowers. On each page three stacked diamond medallions carry gold calligraphy: a small pointed diamond at the top, a larger elongated diamond at the centre on a deep maroon ground, and a small pointed diamond at the base. The two pages meet at a narrow central gutter.

Ahmad Nairizi was the leading master of naskh in late Safavid Iran. Born in Neyriz, he went to Isfahan, the Safavid capital, to study calligraphy, and his dated works run from the 1680s into the 1730s. He copied Qur'ans and prayer books in a refined Persian naskh that later calligraphers, among them Vesal of Shiraz in the nineteenth century, took as their model. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
