A sculpted winged-helmet head glows silver against bold red

A monumental sculpted head in silver-grey tones fills most of the sheet, wearing a winged helmet with a curled wing form and a raised brim band over curling hair. The eyes are downcast and heavy-lidded, the jaw strong, the head turned in three-quarter profile against a flat scarlet-red ground. Bold cream lettering across the lower half names the trade fair; the signature HANDSCHIN sits at the upper right.

Johannes Handschin (1899–1948), also known as Hans Handschin, was a Swiss poster artist of the Basel school. Trained as an architect, he specialised in the airbrush, which gave him both flat and hyperrealist images, and also worked in lithography and linocut. His posters of the 1930s advertised products, Alpine holiday resorts and social causes in a clear, sober graphic language dominated by a single ground colour. His posters are held by the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and the Basel Poster Collection.
