Two cranes shelter together on a snow-laden pine branch

Two cranes perch together on a gnarled pine branch dusted with snow, one lowering its head to preen while the other looks back toward it. Their wings show blue-grey and white feathers with dark flight feathers, and their legs are a pale tan. Dark boughs and clusters of blue-green pine needles surround them against a soft grey-brown sky. The artist's signature runs down the left edge with a small seal at lower left.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is the most widely known of all Japanese artists. Over a seventy-year career he worked under some thirty names, produced books, sketches and paintings by the thousand, and in his seventies designed the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, including The Great Wave and Red Fuji, which reshaped landscape printmaking and later European art. He called himself the old man mad about drawing. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
