Ogata Kōrin (1658–1716) was the supreme master of the Rinpa school — Japan's most decorative and design-forward artistic tradition — and the artist whose cranes, waves, and blossoming plum trees became the defining images of Edo-period Japanese aesthetics. Trained in the Sōtatsu tradition, he worked in painting, lacquer, and textile design, producing compositions of bold simplicity, flat colour, and exquisite pattern. His crane motif is one of the most recognisable images in Japanese art history.
