A stylized macaw's ringed eyes stare from dense charcoal plumage

A stylized macaw faces forward in dense charcoal-black woodcut, its plumage patterned with fine radiating lines and rows of small chevrons across the chest. Ring-shaped eyes and a narrow wedge-shaped beak dominate the symmetrical head, set against a pale rectangular niche shape behind. A radiating starburst medallion sits at the centre of the tail feathers.

Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868–1944) was an Amsterdam graphic artist known above all for his woodcuts. After qualifying as a teacher in 1889 he devoted himself to art, also making etchings, lithographs, watercolours and drawings of birds, exotic animals, plants and flowers, fantastical figures and self-portraits. He taught graphic arts at the school for architecture and decorative arts in Haarlem, where M. C. Escher was his pupil. In 1944 he and his wife were deported to Auschwitz and murdered. His work is held by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the National Gallery of Art.
