Two nightingales perch on a rose bush in an Ottoman album leaf

A rose bush rises through a gold-ruled panel on an Ottoman album leaf marbled in blue, white and pink. A pink rose blooms fully at the top of the stem above two smaller buds; a nightingale with an olive-brown back and pale breast perches just below the bloom, and a second, paler nightingale sits lower on the thorny stem near green leaves. Three small flies hover near the flowers, and a small cipher signature sits at the lower left.

Abdullah Bukhari was one of the leading painters of eighteenth-century Ottoman Istanbul, active from about 1725 into the 1750s. He worked mainly for collectors' albums, painting single figures, flowers and birds in a style that was unusually personal among the Istanbul painters of his day, and he signed his works. His album paintings are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
