An eagle perches on rocky, feather-like foliage, its head raised in profile and its beak slightly open. Dense reserve-white plumage stands against a black ground, while the sky behind is printed in metallic gold and soft grey with swirling curls and wavy bands. A toothed, saw-edge border frames the whole design in the same gold. A small monogram cipher sits beside the tail feathers; the sheet is inscribed Proefdryk, Dutch for proof print.

Huib Luns (1881–1942) was a Dutch painter, sculptor and writer who also designed posters, book covers and medals. Born in Paris, he studied at the Rijksnormaalschool in Amsterdam, began his career in Brussels, and went on to teach in Rotterdam, direct art schools in 's-Hertogenbosch and Amsterdam, and from 1931 hold a professorship at the Technische Hogeschool Delft. He wrote widely on art, including books on Rubens, Spanish painters and Jan Sluijters. His work is held by the Rijksmuseum, the Amsterdam Museum and the Noordbrabants Museum.
