Four condors gather on a rocky crag beneath a radiating sky

Four condors with bare grey-blue heads and dark ruffed collars perch together on a black rocky outcrop, three with heads raised and one preening among pine boughs; a fifth bird's solid black silhouette stands alone on a spire at the left. Behind them, tightly hatched black lines radiate in a great arch across the cream sky, with pale mountains along the horizon below. Small stylised bird-head ornaments fill the upper corners of the black border.

Huib Luns (1881–1942) was a Dutch painter, sculptor and writer who also designed posters, book covers and medals. Born in Paris, he studied at the Rijksnormaalschool in Amsterdam, began his career in Brussels, and went on to teach in Rotterdam, direct art schools in 's-Hertogenbosch and Amsterdam, and from 1931 hold a professorship at the Technische Hogeschool Delft. He wrote widely on art, including books on Rubens, Spanish painters and Jan Sluijters. His work is held by the Rijksmuseum, the Amsterdam Museum and the Noordbrabants Museum.
