Rendered in green and black, a clothed young woman in a striped tunic and spotted headband reaches down toward a small spotted fawn at her feet, her other hand clasped with that of a bare-breasted woman who wears a green wrap slung over one shoulder, leg-bound sandals, and leans on a tall crook. Grape-and-vine garlands loop across a starry night sky above them. A lettered panel below carries the plate's title.
George Barbier (1882–1932) was the leading illustrator of French Art Deco fashion. From 1912 his pochoir plates for the Gazette du Bon Ton, Falbalas et Fanfreluches and the couture houses of Paquin, Worth and Poiret drew on Persian miniatures, Greek vases and the Ballets Russes, setting slender figures against flat, saturated colour. He also designed for the stage and illustrated Verlaine and Louÿs. His plates are held by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
